The area of Trentino coincides with the Autonomous Province Trento and comprises the South part of the Autonomous Region Trentino-Südtirol. The area is mainly mountainous. Anyway, Trentino offers an extremely varied landscape, with imposing peaks and valleys and plains with a Mediterranean climate: a land offering many natural and landscape treasures, but also historic and cultural attractions. This is the reason why it has always been beloved by tourists from all over the world.
In the western part the landscape is dominated by big mountain groups, such as the wonderful Adamello, Presanella and Ortles-Cevedale and the Brenta Dolomites. In the eastern part you can admire the famous Marmolada – the queen of Dolomites – and the Pale di San Martino, the biggest Dolomite Group. Both are located between Trentino and Bellunese. Furthermore, the enormous and imposing Sella group, among Trentino, Alto Adige and Bellunese; the wonderful and famous groups of Sassolungo and Catinaccio and the charming Latemar peaks, all lying between Trentino and Südtirol; as well as the wild and unpolluted Lagorai and Cima d’Asta. So many different mountain groups are not only a very precious natural resource: they also offer an infinite variety of paths, climbing routes, vie ferrate and ski slopes, turning Trentino in a real paradise for mountain lovers
The area is crossed by many rivers, such as Brenta, Sarca and Adige with its affluents, such as the Noce, in which you can do rafting and canoeing. Another important resource of this area is represented by lakes, such as those in Levico, Caldonazzo, Molveno and the northern part of the lake Garda. Anyway, the numerous mountain lakes are the real pearl of Trentino: quiet and pure sheets of water of glacial origin, surrounded by unique landscapes: there are about hundred of them only in Val di Sole. Among the most beautiful waterfalls, those in Varone, Val Daone and Nardis deserve to be mentioned.
Trentino boasts a long tradition in the protection of nature. It includes three protected areas: the Stelvio National park, the Adamello – Brenta Natural Park and the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Natural park, natural oasis where you can admire some of the most charming and typical dolomite animals and plants.
Trentino is a paradise for summer and winter sports, but also an infinite source of attractions for cultural tourism: in fact, the area is enriched by many castles and museums, such as the Buonconsiglio castle in Trent (seat of the museum bearing the same name), the castles of Rovereto and Beseno, the MART museum and many more.
Trentino has been an autonomous province since 1972. Its main language is Italian, buth there are also German and Ladin linguistic minorities.
