Paganella table-land belongs to the Dolomiti di Brenta, the southern area of the chain which formed in a more recent period than the eastern Groups.
In the Dolomiti di Brenta, the area which comprises the resorts of Andalo (1040 m), Molveno (864 m) and Fai della Paganella (958 m), winds from north-east to south west along 10 km, linking Val di Non and Valle dell’Adige to the Valli Giudicarie.
This area of the central-southern Alpine chain has been a protected area since 1967, when the Adamello-Brenta Natural Parkwas instituted. It extends for 618 square kilometres and the three main centres of the table-land offer an ideal access to the park through Val delle Seghe, Selvapiana and Val dello Sporeggio.
One of the jewels of the table-land is the Molveno lake, the second one of Trentino inner lakes for its expanse and depth, with its extremely clear water, which comes from the Brenta peaks and the Paganella slopes. This mount, 2125 m high, delimits eastwards the table-land, gradually sloping down to the three tourist centres, while the eastern slope overhangs with its vertical wall of more than 1000 m and offers a 360° sight on Trentino. Andalo, Molveno and Fai della Paganella are not only three interesting resort both for winter and summer tourism but offer also several cultural events to know history and customs of this land. From Fai della Paganella you can reach, in a few minutes, Doss Castel archaeological site where you can see the rests of a Rhetic settlement of the V-IV century B.C. In Andalo town council you can admire the “14 masi”, a group of houses in the correspondence of the pieces of ground around which the village developed in the ancient times. In Molveno you can visit San Vigilio Church, built at the end of the XIII century in the name of the third bishop of Trento, St. Vigilio, to whom the christianisation of the area is due in about 400 A.D. In Molveno, moreover, you can see also the old water sawmill built in about 1500.
The table-land is an excellent destination also for the lovers of traditional cuisine and good wine.
Among the first courses must be quoted strangolapreti, canederli and the typical barley “alla trentina”; among the main courses polenta with mushrooms and sausages, sauerkrauten and potato cake, and finally the very well-known desserts, such as strudel, zelten and the fregolotti and carrot cake.
Worthy of going with these dishes are the excellent Trentino wines, such as Traminer, Müller Thurgau, Teroldego and many others, which can be a nice souvenir of your holiday and of the Paganella table-land too.
