Dro is one of the most ancient communities in the Sarca Valley: it is situated to the north of the Garda Lake, to the south of Paganella, close to Cavedine Lake. On the north you find Toblino Lake and castle. Dro is a little village and looks like the towns located on the north Garda shore: admire its ancient little palaces and old houses with the traditional engraved stone gates, its medieval towers, low arches and irregular streets.
This area is intensely cultivated with orchards and vineyards: the famous "plums of Dro" are the most delicious in Europe … and do not miss the "Vino Santo" (sweet raisin wine)!
The landscape is really interesting from the morphologic and environmental point of view.
Indeed, the so-called " Marocche di Dro ", are not only one of the rare aride zone biotypes, but also one of the widest and most impressive deposits in Europe. They originated from an enormous chaotic mass of rocks caused by a landslide that dates back to the glaciation period, and huge blocks which lie on the valley floor confering a desert and very evocative appearance to this place.
Nearby the Marocche there is the hydroelectric power station of Fies that was built at the beginning of the 20th century and nowadays is unused. Since 2003 this has become an imaginary landscape, thanks to its industrial architecture: the bridge, the turbine rooms and the park, where the traditional theatre festival, Drodesera Festival, takes place.
In Dro you can visit some interesting monuments, such as the Tower of Guaita, an irregular quadrangular stone building, St. Anthony’s Church , with an altar attributed to Domenico Rossi by Mori, and the Roman bridge of Ceniga.
Finally, this area offers many hike opportunities: all rock-climbers and free-climbing lovers can choose among several faces, suitable both for experienced climbers and amateurs.
