The Piné Plateau (900 m above sea-level) extends parallel to Mocheni and Cembra Valleys, forming with the latter a single touristic centre. The area's common denominator is the extractive industry, an activity which had already developed in the Middle Ages owing to the availability of silverbearing seams and iron pyrite.
The landscape is characterized by the presence of several lakes among which are Serraia Lake, Piazze Lake, Buse Lake on the Piné plateau, the Holy Lake and Lases Lake in Cembra Valley, Santa Colomba Lake in the municipality of Civezzano. The plateau is also famous for the Sanctuary "of the Appearance", where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before a young shepherdess of the place in 1729. The area is well-known also for the Segonzano Earth Pyramids, that is the result of a particular erosive phenomenon.
The picturesque Mocheni Valley, through which one reaches the Piazze Lake, is a place where the old dialect still dominates; this language is strongly influenced by the age-long presence of German miners. The name of the valley itself comes from the German word "machen" which means "to do".
The Cembra Valley looks like a deep and narrow furrow, digged by the Avisio Stream, around which there is an expanse of sunny terraces used for vine cultivation; from them the local people obtain renowned wines and excellent brandies.
The plateau boasts of a solid touristic tradition and is particularly suitable for families; they will indeed spend pleasant days in the area, enjoying the numerous chances to practice sport activities both in winter and in summer. Among the summer possibilities are sailing, surfing, canoing, swimming, fishing, mountain bike outings, horse riding, cycling, bow-shot, tennis and bowling. Among the winter offers are skiing, cross-country skiing, sled riding, together with ice skating, curling, hockey and broomball on the frozen Serraia, Lases, Santa Colomba and Holy Lakes or in the artificial Piné olympic stadium. The latter has become the reign of speed eis skating and hosts the most exciting international competitions.
The Piné plateau and Cembra Valley are also famous for the rich folkloristic and musical traditions, an expression of the most authentic popular culture, which is realised in moments of celebration, common activitiy, engagement and free time as well.
